Cities Prepare for Weekend Winter Storm

A winter storm is expected to impact Kentucky this weekend, with forecasts indicating the potential for ice and several inches of snow across parts of the state. These conditions could lead to hazardous travel, power outages, and disruptions to city services.

We encourage cities to ensure they have taken preventative steps to prepare for whatever winter weather they may receive.

Steps such as these can help your city respond if needs warrant:

  • Have a winter weather response plan that is up to date and shared with key staff.
  • Confirm you have clear procedures for communicating emergency information to residents.
  • Identify backup power and lighting supplies.
  • Check gas levels in vehicles and generators and ensure backup fuel is available.
  • Inspect snowplows and other winter weather vehicles and equipment.
  • Ensure vehicles have stocked emergency kits.
  • Inspect roofs and gutters and have a plan for clearing them in case of heavy snow.

The KLC Winter Weather Preparedness Flyer has more guidelines and suggestions for equipment and staff. The KLC Disaster Preparedness Handbook may also provide a resource to reduce potential risks and disruptions.

Kentucky Emergency Management has available resources, and it provides a map of warming shelters across the state.

KLC Insurance members should report any weather-related damage or claims to Collins and Company as soon as possible through the KLC portal. If you have questions or need assistance, please contact your KLC marketing agent or loss control representative.
