Honor Veterans in Your Local Cemetery with Wreaths Across America

Did you know that there is a national nonprofit dedicated to providing wreaths for veterans buried in local cemeteries? Wreaths Across America is committed to teaching all generations about the value of their freedoms and the importance of honoring those who sacrificed so much to protect them by providing wreaths for the final resting places of veterans. It's not too early to get involved to make sure your local cemetery can provide holiday wreaths.

Nearly 60 Kentucky cemeteries participate in the WAA program, including several that are city-run. Each location requires a coordinator who works with local cemeteries, coordinates volunteers to place and remove the wreaths, and organizes sponsorship of each $17 wreath.

National Wreaths Across America Day will be held this year on Saturday, Dec. 13.

Auburn Mayor and Kentucky League of Cities Past President Mike Hughes participated last year. The City of Auburn held a local WAA ceremony with volunteers, including Boy Scouts of America, other local groups, community leaders, and families of those being honored.

“I would encourage other cities to consider participation, if not for this year, for the future,” he said. “We’ve found the entire experience to be very positive and something our community truly appreciates.” In Auburn last year, every veteran's grave received a wreath.

If your city is interested in being part of the holiday Wreaths Across America event, get started here.
