Layoffs are always a difficult decision for a city to have to make but can become necessary. Below are links to resources we routinely provide to cities to review with their city attorney prior to laying off employees. The city will need to ensure the layoff is not discriminatory and is motivated by lack of work or lack of funding. Additionally, other laws may impact layoff decisions, including the Older Worker’s Benefit Protection Act.
