For years, the Licking River Bridge has connected the northern Kentucky cities of Covington and Newport. Monday morning, the bridge was demolished in a major step toward the construction of a new signature bridge that will strengthen ties between the river cities. See a video of the bridge demolition here.
The new bridge is expected to open by the summer of 2028. It will feature four traffic lanes, dedicated pedestrian and bicycle paths, and improved connections between the central business districts of both cities. Local leaders say the project will support economic growth, enhance safety, and better link neighborhoods and businesses on both sides of the river.
Covington Mayor Ron Washington said the project paves the way for new economic opportunities and long-term growth, noting that a modern bridge will support tourism, attract investment, and improve access for residents and visitors as development continues along the Licking River. Newport Mayor Tom Guidugli called the project a sign of regional progress, emphasizing that the new crossing will strengthen connections between the communities, encourage riverfront investment, and provide a safer experience for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists.
A free shuttle service will help pedestrians and cyclists travel between the cities during construction. Work on the new bridge begins this spring.
