October is City Government Month

The Kentucky League of Cities (KLC) invites you to participate in City Government Month this October by helping us highlight the vital role that cities, city officials, and staff members play in building strong, vibrant communities.

From ensuring public safety and maintaining infrastructure to supporting economic development and enhancing quality of life, city leaders are at the heart of the services and programs that make our cities thrive.

City Government Month is an ideal opportunity to engage residents in meaningful ways and inspire the next generation of leaders.

One popular way to celebrate is by issuing a City Government Month proclamation, which formally acknowledges the contributions of local government and the dedicated professionals who serve the community each day. Cities can also take the celebration further with special activities and events such as:

  • Youth engagement programs – Partner with local schools to organize classroom visits, government career days, or “shadow a city official” opportunities that give students a behind-the-scenes look at how decisions are made.
  • Town hall meetings – Host open forums where residents can share ideas, ask questions, and learn more about current projects and future goals.
  • Citizens academies – Offer programs that give participants a deeper understanding of how city departments work and how residents can get involved.
  • Invite state legislators – Strengthen partnerships by welcoming state officials to visit your community, tour facilities, and hear firsthand about local priorities and needs.
  • Community events – Celebrate with open houses or volunteer days that bring people together and highlight the collaborative spirit of local government.
