Director of Agency Operations

Position Summary: Responsible for the direction, management, and strategic planning of the Kentucky League of Cities Insurance Agency. This includes supervision and professional development of all agency department staff. This position also requires close working relationships with external service providers, third party administrators, and local insurance agents. Responsible for the overall management, education, marketing and retention of Property/Casualty and Life/Health Insurance Agencies.

Work is performed under the general supervision of the Chief Insurance Officer. This is sedentary to light work that requires light to moderate physical effort. Position requires moderate travel and occasional overnight stays. Position requires considerable interpersonal, analytical, written, and oral communication skills.

  • Manages and distributes KLCIA insurance information to KLCIA customer service representatives and in-house marketing agents on a daily basis.
  • Trains, evaluates, and monitors the internal and external licensed agents employed or appointed by KLCIA.
  • Cross-sells all KLC services to insurance customers.
  • Maintains responsibility for departmental budget, including staff travel, training, and other agency expenditures.
  • Trains, educates, and manages over 150 agents who are under contract with KLCIA for the purpose of representing KLCIS/KLGHT at the local level regarding marketing of all coverage lines.
  • Ensures all internal and external local agents maintain their license and continuing education hours to continue their appointment.
  • Oversees the contracted service companies  who assist with the KLC self-funded ASO health insurance program.
  • Works with the third party administrator who is charged with adjusting claims filed for all lines of KLCIS coverage.
  • Works with other KLC departments to provide members with an unrivaled insurance experience.
  • Develops and implements insurance product marketing strategies.
  • Delivers renewal quotes to current insurance members, local agents, and prospects.
  • Makes insurance presentations to city officials at various stages of a sale or at KLC conferences. 
  • Collaborates with the directors of claims, loss control, and underwriting in the pricing of insurance proposals for new and existing members of the insurance program and KLC Health Trust.
  • Reports to the KLC Executive Management team and KLC Insurance Boards regarding marketing condition changes, competition, and new insurance products in the Kentucky marketplace.
  • Ensures the successful retention of all existing KLCIS and KLGHT Health Trust business.
  • Directs the staff members of agency throughout the year to develop a professional insurance relationship with accounts.
  • Manages high-level special projects as assigned throughout the year.
  • Creates reports and develops spreadsheet tools to aid in the success of the program.
  • Performs related tasks as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Possesses the ability to establish strong working relationships with other KLC staff members; ability to meet with city officials, including mayors, city administrators, city managers, council members, commissioners, city clerks, and treasurers to establish quality relationships and to maintain existing relationships between those officials and the Kentucky League of Cities.

Education and Experience: A degree or experience equivalent to graduating from an accredited college or university in marketing, business administration, or insurance-related field is required. In order to perform this job effectively, a person should possess at least five (5) years of experience. This person must understand the operation of all departments within the organization and how they work within the overall mission of the Kentucky League of Cities and how these services relate to the membership.

Special Requirements: Possession of an appropriate driver’s license valid in the Commonwealth of Kentucky and Property/Casualty and Health/ Life Insurance licenses are required.
