Federal Government Extends ADA Website Accessibility Deadlines

The U.S. Department of Justice has extended deadlines for cities and local agencies to comply with Americans with Disabilities (ADA) website accessibility requirements.

Under the updated rule, new compliance deadlines are:

• April 26, 2027 – Government entities with populations of 50,000 or more
• April 26, 2028 – Government entities with populations under 50,000 and special districts

The extension gives local governments more time to evaluate their current websites, identify accessibility gaps, and implement improvements to ensure they comply with ADA standards.

The rule is scheduled for publication in the Federal Register on April 20, 2026.
