U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) - Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS Office) Grants are offered to U.S. territories, local, state, and tribal law enforcement agencies for projects that strengthen the security of local communities.
Funding is intended to implement community policing strategies by providing guidance on promising practices through the development and testing of innovative strategies; building knowledge about effective practices and outcomes; and supporting new, creative approaches to preventing crime, and promoting safe communities.
When properly applied, community policing improves the identification and prioritization of community problems; builds trust and relationships between law enforcement and the communities they serve; and enables an agency to build a culture around accountability, transparency, open communication, and mutual trust.
