HOPE VI Small City Main Street Grants – Due Oct. 12

Cities, Main Street areas, and business districts are eligible for grants to renovate traditional or historic Main Street areas or business districts through this U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Public and Indian Housing program. Applicants are advised that required registrations may take several weeks to complete. Funding is intended for small communities with populations of 50,000 or less.

The HOPE VI Main Street Program provides grants to communities smaller than 50,000 in population to assist in the renovation of a historic, traditional central business district, or “Main Street” area by replacing unused, obsolete, commercial space in buildings with affordable housing units. The obsolete building space property may be publicly or privately owned. Eligible applicants under this NOFO are county governments, city or township governments, and special district governments. The local government whose jurisdiction includes the Main Street area is the only entity that is eligible to receive an award.

The objectives of the program are to:

1. Redevelop central business districts (Main Street areas)

2. Preserve historic or traditional Main Street area properties by replacing unused commercial space in buildings with affordable housing units

3. Enhance economic development efforts in Main Street areas

4. Provide affordable housing in Main Street areas.
