March is Time for Severe Weather Preparedness

Kentucky cities are no strangers to severe weather. Tornadoes ravaged western Kentucky in December 2021, and flooding devastated eastern Kentucky in the spring of 2022. Severe weather can strike anytime, but March is a good time for cities to prepare. March 1-7 is officially recognized as Severe Weather Awareness Week in the commonwealth. March 6-10 is Tornado Preparedness Week.

Preparing for severe weather starts with checking the latest National Weather Service (NWS) forecast. The NWS website provides updated weather information with current forecasts and weather alerts. The NWS provides weather alerts through smartphone apps and the Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) system. The system can send messages authorized by government agencies to your mobile device when you may be in harm’s way. The WEA system doesn’t require an app or subscription.
