Description: Under supervision, performs semi-skilled and manual labor work activities in the construction, maintenance and cleanliness of city buildings, streets and roads: assists other divisions/departments as requested.

Essential Duties 

• Assists in the construction, maintenance, and cleanliness of city streets, roads, bridges, sidewalks, alleys, storm sewers and culverts, manholes, drainage ditches, street signs, barricades, etc.
• May operate motorized equipment; may operate heavy equipment.
• Detects malfunction in equipment; cleans and properly stores equipment and tools after use.
• Performs preventive maintenance duties on equipment.
• Mows grass, cuts trees and tree limbs; picks up leaves as needed.
• Spreads gravel; cleans streets and roads; removes snow and ice from streets and sidewalks when necessary.
• Operates snow plow and salt spreader.
• Cleans out storm sewers and catch basins; pours concrete; makes forms; makes, erects and/or repairs street signs.
• Prepares required reports and records.
• Participates in continuing education programs.
• Applies pesticides along city owned rights-of-way as required.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications 

• Graduation from high school or equivalent (GED) - required.
• Driver’s license – required.
• Must obtain a CDL within one year.
• Must obtain a category 6 Kentucky Pesticide license within one year.

Knowledge 

• Knowledge of, or ability to learn, the geography of the city.
• Knowledge of, or ability to learn, work hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with equipment, vehicles, tools and procedures; ability to comply with established safety standards.
• Knowledge of, or ability to learn, mechanics, carpentry, welding, plumbing, pouring concrete, laying block, etc.
• Knowledge of traffic laws.

Abilities 

• Ability to detect mechanical problems and make minor repairs.
• Ability to learn to read blueprints.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the general public.
• Must be able to effectively communicate with customers, co-workers, and supervision.

Additional Information

Physical Requirements of the Job 

• Work is performed outdoors regardless of weather conditions, requiring intermittent standing, walking, stooping; bending, climbing; reaching, gripping, and grasping
• Must lift objects over 50 lbs
• Must operate vehicle and equipment; exposed to machinery and its moving parts; required to be in high places, confined spaces, and using stairs and ladders
• Exposed to fumes, chemicals, and toxic substances as a requirement of the job

Certification Requirements

• Must be able to obtain a Basic Work Zone Traffic Control and Flagger certification.
• Must obtain and maintain a category 6 Kentucky pesticide license within one year of employment.

Salary Information: $19.41-$21.63/hour
