Job Type: Full-Time 

Salary Range: $50,000 to $65,000 annually

Reports To: City Manager

About Our Community: Fulton, Kentucky, is a unique, historic, and close-knit community located on the Kentucky/Tennessee border. As part of a "Twin City" community with South Fulton, TN, the community features a local population of approximately 5,000 residents. The city is strategically situated on the Canadian National Rail Line and the southernmost section of I-69 in Kentucky, about 45 minutes south of Paducah, KY, and two and a half hours northwest of Nashville, TN. Operating under a Commission-Manager form of government, the city blends small-town heritage with a professional, collaborative leadership environment.

Job Summary: The city commission is seeking a highly qualified, professional, and progressive leader for the position of city police chief. The police chief plans, directs, manages, and oversees all activities and operations of the police department, including law enforcement, crime prevention, and crime suppression programs. The successful candidate will exercise full responsibility for enforcing federal, state, and local laws while providing administrative support to the city manager and maintaining strong community relations.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

  • Department Leadership: Assume full management responsibility for all police services, departmental operations, and work plans. Recommend, administer, and evaluate departmental goals, policies, and procedures.
  • Staff Management: Select, train, motivate, and evaluate personnel. Establish appropriate staffing levels, coordinate career development, and implement disciplinary procedures when necessary. 
  • Budgetary Oversight: Oversee the development and administration of the department budget. Approve and forecast funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Operational Command: Direct and assist with the investigation of major crimes, accidents, or unusual incidents. Safely and effectively utilize police equipment and firearms when required.
  • Community & Interagency Collaboration: Represent the Police Department at City Commission meetings and build positive working relationships with elected officials, media, outside law enforcement agencies, and the general public. Resolve sensitive citizen inquiries and complaints.
