The City of Monticello, KY is now accepting applications for the full-time fire chief position. This position is primarily administrative, involving recruitment, training, supervision, and oversight of firefighters (predominantly volunteers) for the safe protection of the city's inhabitants and property. The fire chief will supervise active fire scenes and must be able to respond in emergencies and other situations in which due coverage is needed. The fire chief works under the supervision of the mayor, and is subject to the city's Personnel Policies & Procedures as now in existence and as may be modified from time to time.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS and DUTIES: Ability to design and implement all administrative activities of the fire department, including recruitment, training, supervision, oversight, and scheduling of firefighters, predominantly volunteers, in a manner to assure optimal protection. Must have the technical knowledge and skills to ensure that the department has all necessary equipment and tools in good working order. Must have the ability to prepare and present a budget for the fire department, and be able to work within the established budget. Must be willing and able to apply for grant funds and properly manage and use all grant funds. Must be able to provide effective leadership, cooperation, and communication with volunteer firefighters, city officials and staff, fire marshal, insurance companies and claimants, and other agencies and personnel relevant to fire prevention, protection, and recovery. Must assist the city clerk in all fire department payroll and other reporting requirements, including for the incentive and pension programs. Must be able to train, oversee, and enforce all city policies relevant to the dire department for all firefighters and the community relevant to fire safety and protection. Must be able to communicate effectively with the Monticello community on fire prevention, fire safety, and fire protection. Must be able to inspect, investigate, and report on complaints of hazardous conditions, violations of law and ordinance, and on fire causation. Must be able to keep complete and accurate records of all financial and firefighting activities. Must be able to lift, push, pull, climb, crouch, bend, stoop, kneel, drag and carry 50 pounds on a regular basis, and up to 100 pounds on an occasional basis. Must have sufficient senses of sight, hearing, smell, and touch to be able to observe and understand all conditions and risks for the protection of self and others. Must have the ability to withstand extreme heat, smoke, and climate conditions. Must have the ability to manage and effectively lead all human resources effectively, including in adverse and stressful situations. Because this position is primarily administrative, must have the ability to delegate and schedule all non-emergency fire protection activities in a cost-efficient fashion, and to explore, plan, and implement all available reimbursements. The fire chief will attend and present a written report at least once a month to the city council, or delegate another to do so.
DESIRABLE TRAINING, CERTIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE: High School Graduate or GED equivalent. At least 25 years of age. At least five years of firefighting experience, including at least one year of supervisory experience in a fire department. Basic 2 Firefighter certification Kentucky Level 1 Fire and Emergency Services Instructor Kentucky Certified State Fire Inspector 1 At least three references relevant to firefighting experience. Valid Kentucky Operators License. Ability to legally and properly operate all fire department vehicles, machinery, and tools.
