Under general direction, performs inspection duties to ensure compliance with Kentucky Building Code and Residential Code, the Existing Structures Code, and applicable Municipal Codes including property maintenance code; also performs related work as required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Accepts applications for permits; computes fees; issues and tracks permits.
  • Examines plans accompanying permit applications for conformance with codes.
  • Inspects sites before construction for practicability of plans. 
  • Inspects sites and buildings during construction for compliance with codes.
  • Inspects buildings upon completion; issues certificates of occupancy upon determining compliance.
  • Notifies permit holder of non-compliance with codes at any time during construction process.
  • Inspects dwellings for compliance with code and takes necessary action.
  • Investigates complaints of code violations.
  • Answers inquiries reference code requirements.
  • Review Business License applications
  • Files permits and responsible for correspondents to applicants and contractors.
  • Assists in maintaining data base for permits/inspections.
  • Tracks daily inspections on iWork software.
  • Other duties as required or assigned.

  • Ability to work proficiently with latest computer software programs.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Must possess and maintain valid Commonwealth of Kentucky driver license and a Building Inspector I, II, or III certification or Federal grade of GS 9 (SBA or FEMA construction emphasis) or higher. If employee has a Federal Grade GS9 or higher, they must also pass and maintain a minimum Building Inspector II certification from the State of Kentucky within 6 months of employment. May be required to attend evening meetings as needed.

WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS Sufficient work experience to obtain certification as a Building Inspector I, II, or III by the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Federal level GS 9 or higher (SBA or FEMA) with construction emphasis will substitute for the experience and certification above. Hands-on experience in the construction field preferred.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS Graduation from high school or equivalent.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS Typically sitting, standing, stooping, climbing and/or walking. Exposed to weather, hills, stairs, ladders, property under construction, noise, and dangerous machinery. Must be able to traverse work sites and move about on and within structures to perform inspections.
