The previous City Engineer of Paducah recently retired after serving for 27 years in the position. Municipal Government in Paducah: Paducah operates under the city manager plan of government. The city is governed by a 5-member Board of Commissioners consisting of the mayor and 4 commissioners, all of which are elected at-large on a non-partisan basis. The mayor is elected to a four-year term while the other commission members are elected to two-year terms. The Board of Commissioners appoint a professional city manager to oversee the day-to-day operations of the municipality. All department directors, including the city engineer, report directly to the city manager.
The City of Paducah has approximately 305 full-time employees and an annual operating budget of $46 million. Paducah is considered a full-service municipality and consists of the following operating departments: Administration, City Clerk, Customer Experience, Engineering, Finance, Fire, Human Resources, Planning, Police, Public Works, and Technology.
The City Engineer Position: The city engineer is a department head level position that reports to the city manager. The Engineering Department consists of eleven full-time staff and has an annual operating budget of $1.9 million. The Engineering Department's mission is to provide effective and efficient support services for all citizens of Paducah. The Engineering Department is responsible for a comprehensive array of municipal engineering services along with the management and operation of the city’s floodwall. The city engineer must be well-versed in all aspects of municipal engineering. He or she must be able to effectively communicate complex engineering principles and practices to other members of the city staff, to elected officials, and to members of the public. The city engineer must also interpret and enforce, in a fair and consistent manner, a variety of engineering rules, regulations, and generally accepted practices. He or she much also be an effective supervisor and leader, and must have good project management skills as well as the ability to manage the Department’s operating budget.

Compensation: The starting salary range for this position is $135,000 to $160,000 DOQ/E. This position also receives a $500/month car allowance. The City provides its non-union employees with both a cost-of -living salary increase as well as a meritorious salary adjustment each year. In addition to the excellent salary, the City of Paducah will provide the selected candidate with an outstanding package of fringe benefits.
