Eligibility requirements for the position of Covington Police Officer Applicants must meet the following prerequisite requirements for the position of police officer:            (a)   Meet at least one of the following education or experience qualifications:                      

  1. Have obtained an Associate's Degree from an accredited college or university, or equivalent hours while working toward a Bachelor's Degree with an average grade of "C" or above, or                
  2. Have an established work history of a minimum of two years, or                
  3. Have a minimum of 24 months of continuous active duty in the regular military service with an honorable discharge, or                 
  4. Have a minimum of two years of full-time continuous employment as a municipal, county or state police officer          

(b)   Be at least 21 years of age, as evidenced by a birth certificate presented.          

(c)   Be a citizen of the United States.         

 (d)   Be an orderly, law-abiding citizen with no prior felony convictions.         

 (e)   Be able to read, write, and understand the English Language.         

 (f)   Be a high school graduate or possess a High School Equivalency Diploma.          

(g)   Possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle.        

(h)   Not be prohibited by Federal or state law from possessing a firearm.          

(i)   Have not had certification as a peace officer revoked in another state.

Education Completion of at least 30 credit hours at an accredited college or university with an average grade of "C" or above or 24 months of continuous active duty in regular military service with an honorable discharge or 2 years continuous employment as a municipal, county or state police officer.

Testing, Examinations, & Evaluations All candidates must successfully complete a written examination, physical agility, oral interview, psychological, polygraph, and background examinations, including fingerprints.

Physical Agility Test Standards The physical agility test battery consists of five items. This approach employs an “overall” scoring scheme which allows a lower score on one test item to be compensated by a higher score on another test item. The following chart is used to determine the points earned for each event. In order to meet the state standard, an overall minimum of 50 points must be achieved. Failure to meet the overall minimum requirement constitutes a failure for the test battery.

  • Keep abreast of changing trends and practices in policing and the community and make recommendations and suggestions to their immediate supervisor on how the Department might better accomplish its mission.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of all sensitive materials or information that they come into contact with.
  • Respect the Constitutional rights of all citizens while enforcing all Federal, State, and local laws.
  • Read, write, and communicate at 12th grade or higher level. Speak before citizens and professional groups.
