Economists Predict Downturn in Road Fund
September 17, 2025A group of economists met this week in Frankfort to predict revenue and economic trends for the state.
Greg Harkenrider, the deputy executive director of the Office of State Budget Director, told economists comprising the Consensus Forecasting Group that the work presented to the committee includes a preliminary estimate of revenues, with an official estimate to come in December.
Of major importance to cities is the road fund and motor fuels tax; all predictions for fiscal years 2026 and 2027 show decreases.
Fuel consumption has remained flat over the last decade with some growth which comes from the change in the tax rate.
In December, the CFG will once again make its estimates so that the General Assembly may allocate the predicted revenues in the biennium budget.
