Abuse of Overtime
Is a city required to compensate an employee for working unauthorized overtime?
The simple answer to this question is yes. However, this does not mean employees can work overtime whenever they want without consequences. Below are the steps to preventing this costly abuse:
- Make it clear within the city personnel policies, that all overtime requires prior authorization by a supervisor. Also important to note is that employees sign off that they have received, read and understand the policies.
- Once the unauthorized overtime is worked be sure to discipline employees equally, but remember that you cannot refuse to pay them for the time worked.
