The City of Murfreesboro City Council is seeking an enthusiastic, experienced local government professional to become its next City Manager. This is a wonderful opportunity for a creative and resourceful leader to help shape the future of this growing and vibrant Middle Tennessee Community. Known as the “Heart of Tennessee,” the City of Murfreesboro covers 61.09 square miles and is home to 130,131 residents. It is the county seat of Rutherford County, which has a population of 280,000 and is part of the 13-county “Middle Tennessee” region with nearly 2 million residents. Murfreesboro operates under the council-manager form of government, with the City Council comprised of seven members. Elected officials are part-time and appoint a full-time, professional City Manager who acts as the chief executive and oversees all staff and operations of the City. All City Department Directors report directly to the City Manager. The City has a general fund budget of $155 million, a total budget of $300 million, including water resources utilities fund and City School funds. The current property tax rate is $1.2066 for each $100 in assessed value. There are approximately 947 full time and 350 part-time employees, excluding City Schools employees. The ideal candidate is a strongly committed individual who has a positive record of achievement and a history of developing constructive working relationships with both internal and external stakeholders. He or she will actively solicit ideas from all levels of the organization and will have the ability to earn respect and to foster innovative solutions through sound administrative practices and strategic planning skills. This strong leader will bring significant fiscal management, economic development, interpersonal, and communication skills, as well as an ability to work closely and effectively with Mayor and Council, city staff and the community. The ideal candidate will hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, with an undergraduate or a master’s degree in public administration or business administration preferred. A minimum of five years of progressively responsible work experience as a City Manager, Deputy City Manager, Assistant City Manager, or department head in municipal government is required.
